5 Minute Spring Makeup Look + Makeup GIVEAWAY!

Monday, April 10, 2017

Since my kids are close in age and toddlers now, they play together well. I’m taking advantage of this by using the time to do a quick makeup application for myself. This application is something I do before we engage in an outdoor activity or even when we’re just at home. It’s a good way to wake me up and help me feel ready to chase my boys around. 😉 Here’s a step-by-step makeup tutorial, perfect for women who only have 5 minutes to spare for makeup. This is great for busy moms like me!

1 After I moisturize, I use a primer that has an illuminance glow finish on my face. I love it!

2 Using liquid concealer that comes with a wand, I apply it under my eyes and around my nose to even out these areas.

3 I usually use my fingers to blend my concealer, but I find using beauty blender (similar like this)a quicker way to blend liquid concealers. I love to spray my beauty blender with a bit of facial spray (water will work too), so that it’s easy to blend with the liquid product.

4 Right now, I like using an eyebrow pencil that comes with a brush tool on the end. This way, I can brush off and blur edges quickly.

5 I then apply blush onto my cheeks. I have recently been using a lip and cheek stain as my blush, which is easy to apply and blend using just your fingertips. I love how it stays on longer. Plus, it is made with all-natural ingredients like cherry fruit water which prevents fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

6 I use the same product for my cheeks for my lip color. I also like how the colors fit for springtime. I have dry lips, so I like to apply lip balm on top of it.

7 Next, I curl my eyelashes and apply mascara.

8 After that, I put highlighter powder on my upper cheeks and/or bridge of the nose. I use a technique where I spray a little bit of facial spray (or water) on the brush, before applying  the highlighter powder on my skin. Check my post about this technique here.

9 (Optional) Apply a flesh-colored eyeliner on your waterline. This makes my eyes open up and helps me look less tired. Be sure you blend, so it won’t look patchy.

10 (Optional) Use a contour powder (which is 2 shades darker than your skintone) on the side of your nose and cheeks.

Introducing: Hello Island Mama (+GIVEAWAY for 2!)

Monday, August 1, 2016

For the past few months, I’ve been thinking of changing my blog’s name, as well as its domain name. As a makeup artist, this site served as my makeup portfolio for the past 5 years. However, after becoming a stay-at-home mom with my 2 little boys, I became more active and excited with blogging. It has kept me connected with the art and makeup fields. It delights me how blogging allows me to continue to use the skills I have acquired from Fine Arts college. Of course, it allows me to use the talents that God gave me too! I’m the type of person who likes to try different hobbies that will keep me productive and busy, especially when my kids are napping. My blog has allowed me to channel that creativity and desire to learn!

I’m very excited because starting this month, I’ll be blogging about more than just makeup and DIY tutorials. Now, I’ll be blogging about home decor, family life, stylish outfits (mostly from thrift stores btw, so no high-end stuff here ;)), food recipes that I love using, and other fun stuff that I love to do! vertical_hero_hello_island_mama_philippines_islander_blogger_life_design_makeup_beauty_diy_art_photography_logo_inspiration

With the help of my college friend Feli, owner and designer of Paper Thread Studio, we designed a new logo for my blog called Hello Island Mama. Why Hello Island Mama? Before moving to the U.S., I was raised and born in the Philippines on small island called Marinduque. The logo was inspired by the coconut trees there that I grew up with. It’s also home to things I miss, like the beautiful beaches, fresh seafood, fresh sweet mangoes, and even the tropical weather (especially if it’s winter in Texas).

To celebrate my first blog post on Hello Island Mama, I’m giving away an Amazon or PayPal gift card to 2 winners. Each winner will each receive $25 via Amazon or PayPal (winner’s choice) as a thank you to all my readers who support this blog! I am truly thankful for all of you! Contest ends on 8/6 at midnight. This contest is open to residents of the U.S.A. and all over the world! Enter via Rafflecopter below.

Fresh Face and Glow! (+ SUMMER GIVEAWAY)

em_smith_highlighting_tips_tutorial_evian_review_0 em_smith_highlighting_tips_tutorial_evian_review

When I started to do makeup in the Philippines way back 2009, I was introduced to Evian Facial Spray by my fellow makeup artists. They recommended it for my clients, especially for brides. It is well known for making your skin feel fresh, hydrated, and clean before applying makeup. When you’ve finished putting on makeup, you can also spray this on top of your entire face. This will help the makeup stay on longer throughout the day. If you feel your makeup is too powdery or cakey, you can grab your blender sponge and spray the Evian Facial Spray onto it. Then, gently pat down the areas on your face that you feel are powdery or heavy. Not only did I love to use this with my clients, but I loved bringing this with me to the beach, when I was still living in the Philippines. I would use it to help cool down my face under the heat of the sun.

Now that summer is coming, I’m excited to use my 1.7 fl oz travel-sized *Evian Facial Spray in. It is great for traveling since the packaging is leak-proof and TSA-friendly. The size is handy and perfect for my purse too. It also comes in other sizes, 5 oz and 10 oz. If you get the larger sized Evian Facial Spray, it is way cheaper and you can get more product for the price, compared to MAC’s Setting Spray. Evian comes in a canister and creates some fine micro mists when sprayed. This makes it more relaxing for your face when you spray it on. I’m also surprised that the Evian Facial Spray is a great, handy product for a mother like me. With a baby and toddler, I’m glad that it is safe to use for them too. Living in Texas weather, this is great and handy for freshening up my kids’ faces while walking outside and going to the park.

I would especially recommend that you bring this with you in hot weather, like during the summer season. Again, it is so easy to grab and spray on your face to freshen up and keep your face moisturized. With this spray, I can also create a natural highlighting effect for my face and shoulders, without it looking powdery.

Try to spray the Evian for 2-3 seconds onto your brush, and swipe it off onto your highlighter powder. This technique will help your highlighter stand out even more and make your makeup stay on your skin longer.

I love to apply highlighter on my upper cheeks, bridge of my nose, and upper lip.

You can also try to apply it on your collarbone and shoulder so when the light bounces off your skin, it gives you a natural looking glow.

For you to experience the benefits of this product for yourself, Evian is offering a giveaway to all my readers. 5 lucky winners will receive a summer prize package which includes:

  • A $25 Sephora Gift Card
  • 10 oz evian® Facial Spray
  • Three 1.7 oz. travel size evian® Facial Sprays

(Total package valued at over $75)

Contest ends on May 31, 2016. Enter HERE

Good luck. :-)

Mother’s Day GIVEAWAY: Python Bracelet

Thursday, May 5, 2016

These past few weeks, I have seen 3 snakes! If you know my husband, he loves nature. Whenever we walk with our kids before bedtime, he tries to look for snakes to show to our son (Follow me on Snapchat: ememist). I’m totally not a fan of them, especially if there is snake where I am walking! It totally makes me freak out. I mean, I don’t mind looking, but I don’t want snakes touching my skin, and I won’t hold them!  Anyway, when I tried on this Python Bracelet from Rebecca Lankford, I felt that I conquered my fear. Haha! This bracelet is hand-made in Houston, Texas. The cool thing about this bracelet is that you can use this as a choker necklace too! It has a magnetic closure which is easy to open and close. What I love about Rebecca’s work is that it is inspired by love, faith and nature. If you love necklaces, bracelets, rings and one-of-a-kind accessories, check out Rebecca Lankford’s website for her stunning designs!

My Birthday Wishlist (+GIVEAWAY for TWO!)

Monday, April 18, 2016

I’ll be saying goodbye to my 20s next weekend! Am I excited? Yes! I feel that the more I age, the more new things I learn (like about motherhood and marriage) and the more I learn to mature. I wonder what my 30s will be like!  While writing down what I would like for my birthday, I actually thought, “Hmm… What else do I really want, aside from sleeping without early-morning interruptions from my kids, and a vacation in the Philippines?” Here are a few ideas I came up with:

  1. Bare Minerals Eyeshadow – I’ve heard good things about BM eyeshadows. They focus more on natural looking to wearable smokey eyes, which I’ve been using lately! This palette is good for a day-to-night eye makeup look.
  2. Hello Panda + Yakult – Most people prefer coffee as an energizer, but I prefer Yakult! I’ve been drinking it since I was a kid. I remember when I used to paint in college into the middle of the night, this was my power-up! I also think that a great match for Yakult is Hello Panda.  Brent knows how much I love Hello Panda. I always receive a BIG box every Christmas! PS: This is not an exotic food. It’s a chocolate-filled biscuit. Try it and let me know what you think!
  3. Becca Backlight Primer – It’s a primer that gives your skin a luminous glow!! Ahh! This is gorg for Summer!
  4. Tweezerman Pro Eyelash Curler – I have short eyelashes, so I’m always looking for a great eyelash curler. I’m looking for one that not only curls my lashes, but keeps them up. Has anyone used this Tweezerman curler before? Thoughts?
  5. CVS Photo Prints – I bought a big photo album a couple months ago, but I haven’t been able to use it. I always want to print my favorite shots of my family, friends and photography works since I have tons of them in my computer. It’s just that I never have a chance to print them out! I’m happy with how CVS photo prints work, as it it is affordable and the colors are great. I still like the way traditional photo prints look compared to photo books. I’m just more on the traditional side sometimes. :)
  6. Chicken Pad Thai – I love Thai food, and this means Pad Thai with Som Tum Salad. Brent is really good at making Pad Thai… Maybe he can make me some on my birthday… *cough* *cough* Maybe he can also make it spicy, please. 😉
  7. Thrift Store Day – This is the place where I can say I relax by digging through clothes and a variety of items. I love to grab my kids’ clothes here too! I just like how it challenges me to find good things that I can style, and at a very cheap price!!

After I finished writing this, I realized that if I had to pick my top 3, I’d choose: Chicken Pad Thai, Hello Panda + Yakult, and Thrift Store Day! Haha

April is my birthday month, so to celebrate and show my appreciation, I’m giving away these gorgeous green leaf makeup pouches for you and a friend (it can be your mother, sister, cousin etc.). My friend from college who is also based here in the the US, just launched her Etsy shop. I want to support her by sharing her shop with you all. I actually requested her to create a pouch inspired by a tropical summer island. The fabric is so beautiful, soft, and well-made. It’s big enough to store cosmetics, makeup brushes, hair accessories, or a phone. Whether you are bringing it to the beach, pool party, brunch date, or matching it with your outfit, this pouch is perfect on the go for summer!

How to enter and WIN:

  1. Simply follow me @emsmithartist and @ShkadoodleNoodle on Instagram
  2. Tag a friend in the comment box of my Instagram giveaway photo. That’s it!

Contest ends on 4/25 at midnight. I will message the winner in her Instagram. This contest is open to residents of the US and all over the world! :)
