7 Must-Try New Year’s Eve Makeup Looks

Thursday, December 29, 2016

I promised myself that this year we would celebrate New Year’s Eve, even if we stay at home. I don’t want to just go to sleep in the evening. Something I’ve been missing about New Year’s Eve are the Filipino celebrations. How is the celebration done the Filipino way? With loud music, banging pans to create noise, LOTS of food, parties with family and friends, waiting for the countdown on TV, fireworks and firecrackers everywhere, collecting round type of fruits for fun, wearing polka dots clothes, and so much more! I also miss dressing up and putting makeup on for the occasion! If you have plans for New Year’s Eve, here are 7 makeup looks to give you ideas on what to try for your New Year’s Eve celebration.

Wear matte red lipstick.

Double the liner, but try a liquid metallic on top to add some fun to your eyes.

Or, simply play with winged eyeliner and a bare skin look.

Try metallic colored eyeshadow to emphasize your eyes. Don’t forget to apply it on the tear duct area as well.

Opt for golden metallic eyeshadow all over the eyelids, and use false lashes if you’d like.

Try colored shimmer eyeshadow for smokey eyes. Use two colors like deep purple and bronze (for crease) to get a nice gradient look.

Smokey eyes don’t always have to be black. You can try using different tones of silver or gray, and use white eyeliner on the waterline to open up your eyes.

Less foundation is always good for pictures. Just make sure you brush off some setting powder on the areas of your face that get shiny (like your T-zone, around the nose). Avoid wearing foundation with a high SPF. This helps keep your face from reflecting white in photos with flash due to the foundation.

I hope everyone will have a blessed and fun celebration! How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve? Share it in the comment box below! 🙂

See you next year!

Portrait Session With Dr. Tran

Friday, November 4, 2016

Since we moved back to Houston, we’ve been reconnecting with our old friends. One of those friends is Jana. I met her through my husband’s grad school and clicked. Plus, we both like makeup. 😉 I’m glad we had the time to see each other, chit-chat, and have a fun time during this photoshoot. I’m proud and happy for Jana and the others my husband and I met through his psychology grad school program. After long years of studying and hard work, they now have their doctorates and are happy with their field of work. Here’s some info to get know a little more about Jana.

Dr. Jana Tran is a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston.

She works full time as a staff psychologist at the Houston Fire Department, where she provides therapy services to firefighters and responds to critical incidents, such as line of duty deaths. Dr. Tran also has a private practice aimed at supporting survivors of trauma, including combat Veterans and survivors of childhood abuse, rape, and interpersonal violence.

Her research interests center on the impact of trauma on sexual behaviors and functioning, and she recently published a paper on this topic in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. On a more personal note, Dr. Tran has a passion for yoga, lifting weights, salsa dancing, camping, and spending time with loved ones, including her pug, Leo.

If you are looking for a therapist to give you advice or tell you what to do, then Dr. Tran is not the right person for you. She regards clients as the experts of their own lives, and she honors and respects their beliefs, values, and goals. As your therapist, her job is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space to facilitate your own healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. Dr. Tran offers a free 5-minute phone consultation to determine if her practice is a good fit for you.

My Dewy Bronzed Foundation Tutorial

Monday, June 20, 2016

Hello first day of summer!! I’m excited for today’s post sharing a foundation routine that I have been using lately. It’s more of a dewy, glowing-bronzed-skin look which is suitable for this season. First of all, I’ve been using Jergens Natural Glow tanning lotion  for a couple of months now. I love how it makes my skin look more tan for the summer in a natural looking way. If you haven’t used it, you should try it and let me know how it works out for you. Check out my my Jergens blog post HERE.

Here’s my step-by-step tutorial on how I achieve this dewy, bronzed skin look. This is after I have already applied eye make-up.

before_after_em_smith_summer_dewy_bronzed_natural_makeup_look_tan_skin_foundation_tutorial_8 After having sprayed my skin to freshen up, I used BECCA Cosmetics – Backlight Priming Filter all over my face. Whenever the light bounces off my skin, it gives it a radiant glow. It also has a shimmer to it, but isn’t glittery.

  1. I love to use Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream for this kind of weather. It feels soft and lightweight on my face. Plus, it’s totally natural looking which is the best way to have it for summer. I used my fingers to apply it, focusing on the areas which I outlined on the image above.
  2. I then used liquid concealer Bare Minerals Bareskin Concealer with medium to full coverage. I applied it under only the dark areas under my eyes, bridge of my nose, and a little bit on my upper lip.
  3. Using a powder brush and translucent powder, I tapped it off before applying this product so that I wouldn’t get too much on my skin. Doing this helps to avoid cakiness. I only focused on putting this powder under my eyes and little bit on my forehead. By doing this, it keeps my skin from having a matte finish and still look natural.
  4. To warm up my face, I used Rimmel Natural Bronzer and gently slid it on the side of my cheeks, around my forehead, sides of my nose, and around my jaw area.
  5. To start highlighting, I sprayed my brush with this product and used Hard Candy Bake Bronzer as my highlighter for my upper cheeks, bridge of my nose, center of my forehead and my upper lip. Make sure to blend it well.
  6. To make my skin look summer-ready, I love to use a golden bronzer. Using a big round brush, I slid it off to the sides of my forehead and sides of my cheeks.

7 Beauty Tips To Know For Spring

Wednesday, March 30, 2016

As the weather changes to warm and sunny, I’ve been changing my makeup routine into a lightweight and softer look. Showing your “true skin” is the key for this season. I don’t mean to say that you can’t wear any foundation, but don’t apply foundation in heavy layers. Doing so will just make your face look over-done and obviously cakey, since there will be a lot of sunlight and heat from the sun. Here are my 7 Makeup and Beauty tips for Spring!

1 Lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer is always the best option to create that natural-looking glow. I’ve been using a gel cream-based which I used for my Tropical Makeup Look Tutorial. Using foundation only on the areas you need to even out (or concealer to hide some spots) is much nicer to use for this season, than trying to cover your entire face with heavy or full-coverage foundation.  Liquid foundations are great to use too, since it easily blends with your skin. If I think my liquid foundation is too heavy, I like to mix it up with a little bit of facial moisturizer. Using beauty blender can also help to achieve a flawless foundation finish.

2 Always apply moisturizer onto your face. This gives the makeup a soft canvas to paint on, and it softens dry areas like around the nose and/or lips. I like to massage my face with moisturizer for a few seconds and let it dry, before applying makeup. If you plan to put eyeshadow, skip putting moisturizer on your eyelids so that the eyeshadow will stick well onto your skin. If your under-eyes are dry or feel tight after applying concealer, try to blend eye cream with your concealer to achieve a softer finish.

3  This is fastest way to get rid of the shine on your nose, t-zone and other areas on your face, rather than reapplying powder.

4a I like to blur lines in applying eyeshadows, lip liner, or lipstick. Use a clean blending brush to soften the edges of eyeshadows. Then, use your fingertip to blur any edges from your lipliner or lipstick. I skip the “defined” lip finish for this season, as I think it’s much nicer if your lips have a softer and naturally effortless look for spring. Avoid sharp brows as well, by using a Q-tip or your finger to soften eyebrow makeup.

5a  It’s good to be back wearing shorts and skirts. I love to use baby oil for an instant, healthy looking glow on my shoulders, collar bone, arms, and legs. Not only does baby oil give your skin a beautiful shine, but it also softens it! Before applying another layer of baby oil, let your skin absorb the first layer.

6a  Another product I love to use in the spring is cream blush. It gives the most natural looking blush on my cheeks. Some cream blushes can also be used for lip color, and even eyelids.

7a  If you are applying powder (either compact or loose), I recommend using brushes instead of sponges. Brushes give a more natural finish and are easier to build up with. Just make sure you tap the brush off after grabbing powder, to avoid getting too much product on your face (We don’t want cakey).

Meet Blare June

Monday, March 7, 2016

Since returning to Texas from LA, I’ve been working with fashion bloggers in Dallas. Today’s post is about a Canadian blogger, Lesley of (Nope, I didn’t fly to Canada 😉 ) Lesley attended a conference called Create and Cultivate and it was her first time in Dallas, Texas. Lesley is new to fashion blogging, but it is cool to know that she has been featured in Lauren Conrad’s blog.  She even wrote an article Don’t Burnout Babe: 8 Signs You’re Seriously Overdoing It” on the Create and Cultivate website, and also writes for Way to go Lesley!!  What makes her and her blog cool and unique, is that she works as physician specializing in psychiatry.  It’s so wonderful to know that behind those fashionable clothes, she also helps others by talking about mental health and life in her blog. Follow and support her by visiting and her Instagram @blarejune

For her look, she requested a natural bronze makeup. The morning we did the makeup, she only had 4 hours of sleep after traveling from Canada to Dallas. I made her look fresh and awake by highlighting her undereyes and using pinkish blush and lip color. And of course, I used bronzer for healthy, glowing skin. Skecher’s Shoot

Thursday, February 25, 2016

It was cool to work again with this talented lady, Lauren Bloom, who invited me to do a shoot for Skechers’ newest sandals for Spring collection. For the model’s look (her name is Lauren too, who is a fashion blogger in Dallas by the way, check out her blog!), I decided to create a subtle and natural look yet defined. Hairstyling was done by the talented Macey. Here are my favorite shots!
